A small market town until the 18th century, Yeovil is now a busy
industrial
centre. It is noted for its 300—year—old glove—making industry as
well as its
more recent industries, which include one of the world’s largest
helicopter
constructors. To the west of the town, near Montacute, is the quarry of
Hambdon Hill, long famed for the golden Ham Hill limestone, which has
been
used for so many of Somersets villages and mansions. There is a large
Iron
Age fort on the hill. The museum in Hendford Manor Hall contains a noted
collection of firearms, and also some remains of Roman mosaics. Yeovil’s
Nine Springs, at the bottom of Hendford Hill, are reached by a waterside
walk
through woods-huge beeches and shaded paths, with nine springs flowing
into an enchanting lake. |
